Locally made crafts, clothing and more to take home

Every week, locals and tourists unite for food and fun at the Providenciales Fish Fry

The Thursday Fish Fry was an established tradition for so many locals, tourists and expats. Here, we could all gather to fully enjoy the islands’ cultural beauty, a reminder of how great it is to belong in this beautiful place.

As the pandemic slowly made its way to the Turks and Caicos, our weekly Fish fries unfortunately went on a hiatus. Covid prevention measures made it impossible to go on, and eventually, everybody’s Thursday go-to became a thing of the past.

On April 21st 2022, the Turks and Caicos Tourist board’s weekly Island Fish Fry officially resurfaced, and we couldn’t be more excited. Partly, because what better excuse to go out and meet amazing people, but mainly, to finally reunite the very best of the Turks and Caicos Islands in one event. So, without further ado, let us walk you through it.

Located at Stubbs Diamond Plaza in Grace Bay (next to Mr. Grouper), the event relaunch did not disappoint. Sure, it was busy, but nothing out of the ordinary after a 2-year hiatus. Locals, expats, and tourists were all super excited to attend, and the night was a perfect combination of local food and drink, art and craft stands, live entertainment, and the highly anticipated Junkanoo. With expert coordination and a secure site, families, couples, and friends had a fun, memorable night.

Food, drink and shopping

When we first arrived, we stopped by Nicky’s stand, where she sells her beautiful paintings and crafts. Besides this first stop, there were plenty of shops to explore and patrons could easily find something sweet to take home. Whether it’s clothes, art, jewelry or any other handcrafted item, the Fish Fry serves up lots of delightful choices for everyone. Needless to say that with restaurants coming together, the air smelled intoxicatingly good. Local food vendors showcased specialities that adult visitors could perfectly pair with locally brewed rum, and various cocktails of choice, including the Turks and Caicos national drink— the Gully Wash— a delicious creamy cocktail filled with sweetened condensed milk. Perfection.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream !

While adults enjoyed a cool drink, kids indulged in yummy local ice cream or frozen yogurt, served from the Giggles and Turkberry ice cream trucks! After dinner and dessert, it was time for our favorite part of the evening: live entertainment. For starters, milestones such as birthdays, anniversaries, engagements or even graduations were highlighted by an MC who cheerfully set the mood, stating: . This is how we do it here at the fish fry, we make you feel special” With this, the crowd cheered and the evening festivities were off to a great start.

Dance, delight and be merry

Ever heard of a Junkanoo? True to tradition, this local demonstration of dance, culture and rhythms is valued in the Islands and gives visitors a taste of local talent, and plenty of cool photo ops.

Thursday Fish Fry in TCI - at nightIf you’re planning on attending the Thursday Fish Fry while on vacation in Providenciales, here are a few things to keep in mind.

  • For food and shopping with your family and younger kids, arrive early. The event starts at 5:30 PM and ends at 9:30 PM.
  • If local drinks and live entertainment are what you’re shooting for, come in at around 7:00 pm
  • Parking can be challenging later in the evening so plan ahead.
  • While most stands accept cards, it’s always easier to carry some cash.
  • Worried about washrooms? Don’t be. They have facilities on site.
  • Though there are tables and chairs, most of the time, folks are standing around. If you’re bringing young kids, maybe consider a stroller. And on that same note, while the event is held on pavement, weMd suggest wearing comfortable shoes.

The Thursday Fish Fry is great fun. Come discover local flavors, talent and products. But most of all, come to create memories.
